KCS sent a team of seven participants to the Hawaii Chess Federation’s MLK Scholastic tournament, held on Monday, January 19, at Washington Middle School.  Chess club members competed in six rounds of chess in the “open” division of interscholastic play.  The “Swiss-system” style of tournament matched participants with competitors on similar levels as the rounds progressed. This made for intense games of chess throughout the day!

Our team placed 6th out of 23 private and public schools that participated, and many of our returning players showed improvement in their play.  After each round, players would review their games with Advisor Mr. Kwong, as they were required to record their moves in a notebook during the match.

As the club returns to afterschool practices in the upcoming weeks, Mr. Kwong would like to see his experienced players employ more strategy in “end game” scenarios and avoid mistakes.

The next event for the chess club is the Presidents’ Day Sectionals on February 16.
