KCS fields Cross Country Team

If you’ve spotted a pack of KCS students running in the Kaimuki/Kahala neighborhood recently, you’ve seen members of KCS’s first cross country team!

The Hawaii Sports Fellowship league, which currently sponsors volleyball, basketball, and soccer for six Christian schools, has added cross country this year.  Although KCS was not able to participate in the first meet held in December, the team has been training for the next meet on February 19.

Coached by Mrs. Takahashi and Pastor Valente, the team practices four times a week.  Each practice begins with a warm-up run, stretches, and drills.  On Mondays and Fridays, the team focuses on running long distances (5-6 miles) to build cardio endurance.  Tuesdays consist of speedwork, hill intervals, and abdominal exercises to increase muscle power.  On Thursdays, the athletes practice pacing themselves during a timed 2-mile race.

As well as having each athlete succeed and improve physically in his/her running, the team also has set goals of facing new challenges with a persevering attitude and cheering and supporting one another.

Meets will take place at Waiau District Park.  Athletes will complete a 2-mile course and the top 5 runners for each team will be scored.  Boys and girls will run in separate races.  KCS looks to make a good showing as a team in next month’s meet!
