Two KCS student entries in the 2015 National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poem Contest were recognized earlier this month. Students composed and illustrated a poem that incorporated this year’s theme, “Chemistry Colors our World.” Koamalu Takahashi’s (Gr. 1B) ABC poem won first place for the K to Gr. 2 category, and Haley Wong’s (Gr. 7A) haiku received Honorable Mention for the Gr. 6-8 category. Koamalu and Haley received $50 and $10, respectively, for their entries. Their work was on display at Kahala Mall over Fall Break. Great job!

High School World Travelers

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14).  The light of KCS reaches a little further this week, as the high school sends 22 of its students to international destinations.  These educational trips that extend learning beyond the classroom are key components of KCS’ high school program.

Sixteen students and five chaperones are part of this year’s Philippines Mission Trip team. They will stay with host families and spend time sharing God’s love with the children in Paranaque, Cabuco, Marikina, and Payatas.  The team plans to distribute 18 boxes full of items donated from the KCS ‘ohana.  Mrs. Seria, one of the chaperones on the trip, hopes this opportunity to serve in difficult and humbling circumstances will encourage the students to grow into individuals who think of others before themselves.

The juniors and seniors will be going on KCS’ first trip to China. They will tour historic sites in Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai, complementing their coursework in Chinese language and culture as well studies in Asian and World History. Activities on their itinerary include calligraphy, tai chi training, an acrobat show, and lunch with a local family. Mrs. Ahn, who will be traveling with group, looks forward to the opportunity they have to visit a school in Beijing and establish relationships with the students they meet.

Both trips are sure to provide students with enriching experiences and lifelong memories!
